Semiconductor Earnings Preview Q3 2026: TSMC and ASML

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSM) and ASML are two of the earliest large reports from the chip supply chain each quarter. Because TSMC manufactures chips for much of the industry and ASML sells the lithography equipment that chipmakers depend on, both are read as indicators for the whole sector, including AI hardware names. Check the WallStreet.AI Earnings Calendar for confirmed report dates, since companies can shift timing.

This preview does not forecast results. It outlines which numbers the market tends to focus on, how to separate headline noise from durable signal, and how to size risk before the event.

Two Different Positions in the Chip Chain

  • TSMC is a foundry. Its results reflect how much finished chip demand customers are placing, and how much of that is advanced-node production.
  • ASML is an equipment maker. Its results reflect how confident chipmakers are about future capacity, because they order tools well before they produce chips.

TSMC tends to speak to current demand; ASML tends to speak to demand a year or more ahead. Treat them as separate signals.

TSMC (TSM): Metrics That Tend to Matter

1. Revenue guidance for the next quarter

Forward guidance usually moves the stock more than the quarter just reported. Compare the guided range with where analysts were positioned before the report.

2. Gross margin

Gross margin shows pricing power and factory utilization. A margin miss with strong revenue can still pressure the shares, so read both together.

3. Capital spending plans

Rising capex signals management expects sustained demand, but it also weighs on near-term free cash flow. Note whether the full-year capex range changes.

4. Revenue mix by platform

Look at how much comes from high-performance computing versus smartphones and other segments. A growing high-performance computing share is often read as a proxy for AI-related demand.

ASML: Metrics That Tend to Matter

1. New orders (bookings)

ASML's order intake is the metric many investors watch most closely, because it shows what customers plan to build. Orders are lumpy, so look at the trend across several quarters rather than one print.

2. Backlog and next-year commentary

Management comments on the following year's demand often set the tone. Pay attention to any change in wording about growth or about specific end markets.

3. Regional and customer mix

Export rules and regional demand can shift where sales come from. Changes in the mix, or in management's tone about restrictions, can move the stock independently of headline numbers.

Reading the Reports Together

  • Both strong: demand and capacity plans point the same way, which is typically supportive for the group.
  • TSMC strong, ASML cautious: current demand is healthy but customers may be wary about adding capacity.
  • TSMC cautious, ASML strong: near-term softness with a longer-term build-out; expect mixed reactions.

Because chip stocks are often crowded positions, a good report can still sell off if expectations were already high.

A Simple Risk Checklist

  1. Decide your position size before the report, not after the price moves.
  2. Know the implied move from options pricing and whether it fits your risk tolerance. See our guide to options Greeks for how volatility affects option prices around events.
  3. Avoid adding to a position solely because a headline looks positive; wait for the guidance and the call commentary.
  4. Remember that results can move related names in the sector, not just the reporting company.

Using AI Signals Alongside Fundamentals

AI tools can help summarize earnings-call language, track analyst estimate revisions and flag changes in sentiment. None of these tools replaces your own risk management. Use them as one input into a plan you define before the report.
